Cody Ortz

  • Cody received his undergraduate degree from Westminster College, where he studied Composition, Trumpet Performance, and Conducting. He completed his graduate studies at the University of Chichester with a focus on Composition and Orchestration for Media Production. During this period, he began teaching in public schools—a career that has since expanded into more than a decade of experience at both high school and collegiate levels.

These combined experiences formed a strong foundation in traditional and modern scoring practices and provided a practical understanding of how music functions technically, artistically, and collaboratively. This well-rounded approach, rooted in formal training and cross-disciplinary experience, supports a scoring process that is structurally informed, emotionally intentional, and crafted with purpose—an ethos that would later support international commissions, industry collaborations, and professional scoring work for stage and screen through Silverling Music Company.

  • Cody has conducted numerous ensembles throughout the United States and abroad, including the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, the Legacy Scoring Orchestra, the Orquestra Sinfônica do Recife (Recife Symphony Orchestra), the Westminster Wind Ensemble, the Quaker City Band, the South Western Symphony Orchestra, and the Youngstown Brass Ensemble.

As a trumpet player, he has appeared with a range of professional and honors groups across the United States, including the American Wind Symphony Orchestra—where he was a featured performer in 2015—as well as the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, the Slope Street Big Band, the Noire Eastern Jazz Group, and the Butchy Big Band. He has also served as Principal Trumpet for both the CBDNA and PMEA Intercollegiate Bands.

  • With a musical voice shaped by a deep commitment to thematic development, orchestral color, and narrative arc, he draws heavily from the film music of John Williams, Howard Shore, and Alan Silvestri. Williams’ The Empire Strikes Back, Harry Potter, and Return of the Jedi exemplify his admiration for melody and structure, while Shore’s expansive worldbuilding and Silvestri’s rhythmic clarity inform his approach to pacing and dramatic motion. His influences also extend to early Hollywood composers such as Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner, as well as the long-form storytelling of video game scores like God of War (2018), Skyrim, and the Halo series.

Rooted in a love for late-Romantic and early 20th-century orchestral repertoire—Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Hanson, Tchaikovsky, Holst, Dvořák, Prokofiev, Elgar, Ravel, Sibelius, Shostakovich, among others—he writes with the conviction that music must carry substance. It should serve the story, remain memorable to the listener, and provide meaningful material for performers, rather than exist as repetitive texture or filler. His work pursues the same emotional depth and craftsmanship that inspired his career from the start.

  • Cody is a baptized Christian whose work is grounded in Faith. Accrediting all he’s been given with music as a gift, a blessing from God, the belief that music is a pathway for truth, meaning, and spiritual resonance is not incidental, but integral to his approach in every project.

Since 2020, he has served as the Director of Music Production for his church, overseeing all worship design, recording, video streaming, FOH mixing, marketing production, sermon podcast management, and the creation of original worship music. He is also the creator of Edge of the Word, a podcast that delivers immersive, long-form sermon experiences through Scripture, original scoring, sound design, and narrative commentary.

Beyond explicitly sacred projects, Cody’s faith informs his scoring approach across all genres—including darker fantasy or emotionally complex narratives. His work often carries a sense of underlying hope, pastoral reflection, or redemptive arc, grounded in a worldview shaped by late-Romantic orchestral expressivity and deep Scriptural truth. He writes not for surface-level effect, but with the conviction that music must carry meaning, reflect human experience honestly, and serve a story greater than itself.

This calling-driven perspective extends into his collaborations with churches, faith-based creators, and storytellers seeking to explore beauty, struggle, and redemption with sincerity and artistic depth.

  • At Silverling, Cody directs a full production workflow that bridges creative vision with technical execution. His studio work includes detailed mockup production—ranging from standalone concept pieces to developmental placeholders and portfolio materials—alongside VST programming for composers and commercial sample libraries, orchestration, engraving, and session preparation, as well as printing and publication.

He leads recording sessions from small studio ensembles to full orchestral productions, oversees mixing and post-production, and supports marketing and final delivery. This entrepreneurial approach ensures that every project is built for both artistic impact and professional viability from initial concept to final realization.
